NEW YORK CITY

Brooklyn Bridge Promenade

Managed by New York City

Mileage: 1.3

New York City is host to many unconventional "trails" and walking routes. Among the best of these is the promenade across the Brooklyn Bridge. The amazing bridge, completed in 1883 by Washington Roebling after the death of it's designer, his father John Augustus Roebling, has different meaning to pedestrians than other bridges.

Unlike other NYC bridges, this one has it's pedestrian walkway up the center, and above the levels of regular traffic. The bridge looks antiquated from this walkway, and with the traffic hidden below, it somehow looks out of place. It is an antique that has survived when everything else within sight is replaced and dominated by reflected pillars of glass. It is one of the best ways to see New York City.

The promenade is accessed from Centre Street at Printing House Square, a small park on the Manhattan side, and from Tillery Street in Brooklyn. Another walkway descends by way of steps through the center of the bridge prior to the end of the Promenade on Tillery Street, Brooklyn.
